President

Wilbur “Tib” Tusler
FAIA, FACHA

Tib Tusler is Past President of the AIA’s Academy of Architecture for Health and was also, for a ten year period, the President of the SMP (now the SmithGroup). He remains actively involved in the advancement of healthcare research, programming, planning and design while dividing his time in retirement between San Francisco and Washington, DC.

Peter Bardwell With over 30 years of experience exclusively dedicated to healthcare planning and design, Mr.Bardwell is honored to be among fewer than 40 practicing architects nationwide to have been named a Fellow in both the American Institute of Architects and the American College of Healthcare Architects.

During graduate studies at Clemson University, Mr. Bardwell was awarded the first ITT International Fellowship to research health facilities in Finland and northern Europe; followed by his receipt of the National AIA School Medal for Design Excellence upon completion of his Master of Architecture in Health Facility Planning and Design.

Mr. Bardwell has held numerous leadership positions with the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health and was 2008 National President. As an invited Founding Member and Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Architects, he currently serves on the Board of Regents and has led the efforts to develop the overall content for the national examination used to assure a high standard for future members of the College.

Mr. Bardwell has served as a jury member for the national Modern Healthcare 2004 Design Awards and most recently was jury Chair for the 2009 AIA National Healthcare Design Awards for Innovation. His national leadership has been further recognized through his invitation to author articles on current health planning and design issues in The Journal of Ambulatory Care Medicine, Health Facilities Management, and in Frontiers in Health Services Management. In recent years, he has given over thirty presentations on a wide range of healthcare planning and design topics to national and international audiences throughout the U.S. and in three foreign countries.

Doug Childs is a Principal with TAYLOR, an architecture firm focused exclusively on healthcare. As a Principal for TAYLOR, Doug leads their San Francisco office. He continually seeks to bring value to his clients, explore ways to make healthcare more affordable, and create safe, comforting environments for patients and staff.


Anthony J. Haas

Throughout his 25 years of professional practice, Anthony J. Haas, AIA, ACHA, has consistently pursued an approach to the design of healthcare facilities that incresases the operational effectivemenss of the medical staff, the well-being of patients and families and the understanding of the design profession about the cetnral issues of medical practice. A natural collaborator, he uses his innate empathy to gain the confidence and support of his clients so that they can jointly advance the state-of-the-art of medical facilities.

A Senior Principal at WHR Architects, a leader in healthcare design with a national reputation and practice, Anthony plays a vital role as a senior medical planner and designer.


Regent
William J. Hercules
AIA, ACHA, ACHE, LEEDAP

 

Bill Hercules has dedicated most of his professional career to the practice of architecture for health.  His leadership clarifies the critical issues, organizational complexities, and technical challenges of the fast-paced healthcare delivery system by developing carefully considered design responses to his client’s market opportunities, satisfying their stakeholders, contributing to their sustainability, and supporting their mission.

Bill is the practice leader of Perkins+ Will in Orlando, which is focused on serving healthcare systems. He is currently a member of the Board of Regents for the American College of Healthcare Architects, the national certification body for the practice of healthcare architecture.  He has served as Vice-Chair of the ACHA Regional Initiatives Committee, and has organized the members of the ACHA within Florida to clarify the value proposition of better architecture to other co-lateral Florida healthcare professional organizations such as the AHCA, FHA, ACHE, and FHEA.  He is 3-term past-Chairman of the AIA Orlando Academy of Architecture for Health, and was instrumental in the initiation of the AIA-Tampa Bay Academy chapter.  He led the national taskforce on Component Connections with the national AIA Academy of Architecture for Health, which formed the basis of the Academy’s regional organization.  He has established the Hercules Prize for Healthcare Innovation within the Florida Foundation for Architecture.  He is also very active in philanthropic endeavors related to Children’s Health, the development of Young Architects, and Christian ministry.

Jennifer Klund

Jennifer Klund, AIA, ACHA has more than 20 years of experience as an architect specializing in the design and construction of healthcare facilities. She serves as a senior medical planner with HG&A in Minneapolis. Jennifer’s recent work focuses on Critical Access Hospitals across the country.

Klund has served on ACHA’s Education Committee for the past two years. She has been administering ACHA’s Exam Prep Seminar at recent national healthcare conferences.


Connie McFarland

Connie McFarland has over thirty years experience with the majority of her projects focused on healthcare. She has served vigorously on the national level of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) where she has been the chair of the AIA Risk Management Committee three times over a ten year term. Connie has served as chair of the 2000 AIA Trust in Washington, D.C. where she held a five year term on the committee. She is a founding Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Architects (FACHA) and has served on the membership committee for many years. Connie is the Co-Chair of the Architects Political Action Committee for the State of Oklahoma. As President of McFarland Davies Architects, Connie manages the day to day activities of the firm. Her primary role in project development is master planning and programming.


Mark A. Nichols

Mark Nichols is a Principal at Loebl Schlossman & Hackl and a co-director within the firm’s Healthcare Practice. With over 25 years of experience, he has specialized in healthcare planning and design. Mr. Nichols has led major expansion and renovation projects at various healthcare institutions, working on both new construction and historic structures. His clients include six of Chicago’s largest hospitals and academic medical centers. He is recognized for his management and leadership skills and his personal involvement in the day-to-day execution of these projects. He recently served as the 2008 / 2009 Chair of the AIA Chicago Healthcare Knowledge Community.

Ray Pentecost is a trained researcher with a doctorate in public health, sees clearly the growing role that rigorous research will have in healthcare architectural practice and is actively working to prepare the profession for it. In 2009 Ray authored “The Practitioner as Researcher,” a chapter in Evidence‐Based Design for Multiple Building Types by Hamilton and Watkins from Wiley & Sons, now seen as a model text for developing a research‐informed architectural practice. In 2008 Ray co‐taught two national AIA webinars on developing and using architectural research to improve design to an estimated 700 participants at 122 sites across the country.

He is an acknowledged thought leader in architecture, participated in the 2009 AIA Knowledge Think Tank to begin building a new national knowledge strategy for the AIA. A member and 2009 President of the AIA Academy Board of Directors, he is dedicated to positioning the Academy as an international, highly relevant, research‐driven industry influence. The Academy Board voted for him to serve a second term as President in 2010.

The AIA Hampton Roads Chapter awarded Ray the “2009 Honor Award for Distinguished Achievement” recognizing career excellence. In 2010 Ray was elevated to Fellowship in the AIA.
