The Next Generation of Patient Rooms

Monday, March 5, 2012 • 3:15 pm - 4:30 pm

Has the patient room design been resolved?  In recent years there has been a great deal of attention and research placed on the patient bedroom and the most effective environment for healing and efficient operations.  Are we done?  The answer is no.  Changes to the structure of US healthcare delivery will significantly affect inpatient care.

This American College of Healthcare Architects (ACHA) Master’s Class will theorize about how future developments will significantly affect the design of acute care inpatient rooms, surveying current research and best practice.

How will the proposed Accountable Care Organizations and a decline in inpatient reimbursement change the inpatient setting?

Study up-to-date-research regarding important issues such as Lean operational improvement, safety and infection control and what the impact will be on inpatient room design.

Review future changes in technology and systems that will impact the patient room.

Examine effective inpatient room configuration and size for different acuity levels bridging 23-hour or less stays to the most critical of care.

Attendee participation will be encouraged.

CEO Forum:  Facility Planning in an Era of Uncertainty

Tuesday, March 6, 2012 • 9:15 am - 10:45 am

Attend this ACHA Masters Series session in order to gain CEO level advice and reflection of their vision of the evolving world, the reaction needed for future facility development and how facilities can help improve the quality of care.

With all of the pressure regarding access to care, cost and reimbursement and government actions, anyone involved with planning, design or construction will need to respond in a strategic, organized plan.  Hear from the decision makers on their personal take and vision on questions such as:

  • How do you view design and how do you use design thinking to make a difference?
  • What do you expect from your project team beyond buildings to leverage value and performance?
  • Do you think facilities will be delivered differently?
  • Do you believe there is an opportunity for evidence informed design?

Nursing and Design: What Matters in Surgery Design

Tuesday, March 6, 2012 • 3:15 pm - 4:30 pm

The presenters will discuss critical operational issues and their implications for planning a surgery department, with emphasis on including the nurse’s point-of-view throughout the process. Data will be presented from a survey of the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) members concerning operating room (OR) design issues that affect the surgical work environment. The survey results offer insight into how best to integrate the nursing team into the design process from its earliest stages through post-occupancy analysis. This American College of Healthcare Architects Master’s Class will enable you to:

  • Describe the design implications of sterile techniques commonly employed in the surgical environment.
  • Define the zones used in the surgical environment and their implications for infection prevention, communications, and the movement of patients, personnel, and supplies.
  • Identify the best opportunities for integrating nursing knowledge into the planning and design process.
  • Discuss the major pitfalls, based on survey results, in OR design from the perioperative nurse’s point of view.

This important discussion is setting a foundation by which ACHA will partner with AORN to identify how each organization can share vital information concerning the development of highly effective operational planning strategies for surgical departments.

This session will feature:
